Chicagoan Joey Purp had one of the better debut albums in recent years with iiiDrops, an album that felt like it bypassed all the typical mistakes that a debut album should fall into. He’s returned today with a new single, “Bag Talk”, and the announcement of an upcoming album called QUARTERTHING.
“Bag Talk” is a bit of a letdown after the jump-in-your-face intensity of iiiDrops. The beat is produced by the prolific Nez & Rio, featuring little else but a vampiric, rising piano and light trap drums.
It’s not a good mix with Purp’s style, sounding like it’s constantly lagging behind while he tries to slow himself down to let it keep up. His rhymes are remarkably unremarkable. The hook isn’t memorable. It’s an odd re-introduction to a rapper who had a great rookie year. Let’s hope the sophomore effort doesn’t all sound like this.
