“Puddles” starts slow and sultry, featuring the soft, soul-tinged vocals of Maceo Haymes, before the severely underrated Saba creaks through for a lightning-quick verse. You think for a moment that he might run away with the track and turn it into a Care For Me loosie, but O’My’s bring it back to Haymes and let his muffled, obtuse singing fold over itself into Peter CottonTale’s lush, jazzy production. The final minute of the track is quiet chaotic bliss.
The O’My’s have been on the periphery of the Chicago soul/jazz scene for a while now. It’ll be interesting to see what they conjure on their album, Tomorrow, due September 7th.
