2010 was a turbulent time in the life of Thebe Kgositsile, aka Earl Sweatshirt. He was at the peak of his strange and very much unprecedented powers. A whirly sidekick to his big-brother figure, Tyler, The Creator. Tracking his course has been enthralling, particularly his slow, dark descent inwards.
“2010” is a bit more bright than a usual Sweatshirt track. The beat warbles through as if it’s been dunked underwater. But Earl sounds more lively than his usual self. Less like he’s lamenting his Odd Future past and more like he’s reminiscing on his achievements. That’s a refreshing turn for the precocious lyricist.
